Lead Poisoning Symptoms

Various medical dictionaries list a multitude of vague symptoms for lead poisoning such as,

• Abdominal pain and cramping (usually the first sign of a high, toxic dose of lead poison)
• Aggressive behavior
• Anemia
• Constipation
• Difficulty sleeping
• Headaches
• Irritability
• Loss of previous developmental skills (in young children)
• Low appetite and energy
• Reduced sensations

Apart from the loss of previous developmental skills this list could be symptoms of a multitude of diseases. One of the most diabolical problems with lead is that it is additive. Exposure simply builds over the years so the initial exposure may not have any symptoms.

Children

Signs to look for are suppressed appetite, marked  fatigue, vomiting, constipation, irritability, abdominal pain, and pale skin. Symptoms are all related to lead dose and your child’s weight.

Adults

Symptoms include muscle pain, numbness in arms and legs, headaches, memory loss, abdominal pain and fatigue.

Diagnosis

A simple blood test can detect lead exposure. People who have jobs that involve lead need frequent blood tests. Children living in in older houses or apartments built prior to 1978 should also undergo blood tests for lead.
